Paihuano femicide: Venezuelan man arrested in Chile
Oswald Herrera, 44, was arrested by Carabineros in Pisco Elqui, Chile, following the femicide of his partner, 27-year-old Daniela Medina. The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday in a rural area of the Elqui Valley. According to the prosecution, the motive was jealousy.
Both the victim and the perpetrator were Venezuelan nationals living in the Paihuano commune. The crime was discovered after a relative in Venezuela alerted family members that Herrera was calling to confess to the killing. Herrera was apprehended in the Arturo Prat area after fleeing the scene. The couple shared three young children, who have been placed under the care of a responsible adult.
In response, the National Service for Women and Gender Equity (SernamEG) has filed an institutional complaint to ensure justice and is working to secure state protection pensions for the victim's children. A court has extended the suspect's detention for three days to allow for further investigation.
