Pitchamon Opatniputh suspended from Asian Games for doping
Thai badminton player Pitchamon Opatniputh has been provisionally suspended from the 2026 Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games after testing positive for furosemide. The 19-year-old athlete provided the sample during an out-of-competition test in Nagoya on September 17. Furosemide is a prohibited diuretic and masking agent under World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulations.
The International Testing Agency (ITA) announced the suspension, which bars Opatniputh from competing, training, or participating in any official capacity at the Games. The news significantly impacts the Thai national team, which was scheduled to face China in the women's team event.
Opatniputh, a rising star ranked 18th in the world, has the right to appeal the decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) and request an analysis of her B-sample. Thai sports officials have noted that the athlete suggested the substance might have come from an anti-inflammatory cream.
In other Asian Games news, the South Korean women's badminton team secured a bronze medal after losing 1-3 to Japan in the semifinals. Despite a victory by world number one An Se-young against Akane Yamaguchi, the Korean team fell in the subsequent matches.
