Piton de la Fournaise volcano enters alert level 1 after seismic activity
The Piton de la Fournaise volcano on Réunion Island entered alert level 1 on October 24, 2026, following a significant seismic crisis. The Observatory of Piton de la Fournaise (OVFP) recorded approximately 150 earthquakes under the southern edge of the Dolomieu area, accompanied by rapid ground deformations.
Authorities initiated the ORSEC Volcan alert system and closed the volcano's enclosure to prevent access. Approximately 30 people were in the sector at the time of closure, and evacuations were carried out by the PGHM. Access to the Grandes Pentes and lava tunnels was also prohibited.
While the magma injection did not reach the surface—a phenomenon described by the OVFP as an ‘aborted intrusion’—experts warn that an eruption remains possible. Although seismicity has returned to previous levels, the superficial reservoir continues to pressurize, meaning an eruption could still occur within days, weeks, or months.
