Piton de la Fournaise volcano nears eruption on La Réunion

The Piton de la Fournaise volcano on the French island of La Réunion is nearing an eruption following a seismic crisis. Authorities have declared Alert Level 1 of the volcanic emergency plan as magma rises toward the surface.

As of Saturday afternoon, October 24, 2026, the prefecture has closed public access to the Enclos Fouqué caldera. Officials warn that an eruption could occur within minutes or hours due to the acute danger of ascending magma.

This event marks the second eruption in recent months, following the last activity on February 13. The volcano, which stands at 2,632 meters, is one of the most active in the Indian Ocean and attracts thousands of visitors annually.
