Pitru Paksha 2026 dates and ritual significance

Pitru Paksha 2026, a sacred period in the Hindu calendar dedicated to honoring departed ancestors, is scheduled to take place from September 26 to October 10. The observance begins with Purnima Shraddha on September 26 and concludes with Sarva Pitru Amavasya on October 10.

During this fortnight, practitioners perform various rituals including Shraddha, Tarpan, Pind Daan, and donations to seek peace and liberation for their ancestors. Families typically perform these rites on the specific lunar date (tithi) corresponding to an ancestor's passing. For those unaware of the exact date, rituals are traditionally performed on Sarva Pitru Amavasya.

In 2026, the Pratipada Shraddha will be observed on Sunday, September 27. Auspicious time windows for performing these rituals include the Kutup Muhurat, from 11:48 AM to 12:36 PM, and the Rohina Muhurat, from 12:36 PM to 1:24 PM.
