Pitru Paksha traditions highlight Pind Daan rituals in Bodh Gaya

During the Pitru Paksha period, religious traditions in India emphasize rituals such as Tarpan and Pind Daan to honor ancestors and seek peace for their souls. In Bodh Gaya, the Mahabodhi Temple complex serves as a significant site where thousands of devotees perform these rites, believing they help ancestors break the cycle of birth and death. Key locations for these rituals include the Dharmaranya, Matangavapi, and Saraswati Pindavedi sites.

Regarding dietary customs during these observances, spiritual leader Premanand Maharaj has clarified the traditional order of meals. He states that on days dedicated to ancestral Shradh, food should first be offered to Brahmins through respectful rituals, including washing their feet and performing Aarti. After the Brahmin Bhoj is completed, family members may consume the remaining food as Prasad. It is customary to prepare Satvik meals, often excluding onion and garlic, focusing instead on seasonal vegetables, lentils, rice, and traditional sweets.
