Pitt Panthers defeat Virginia Tech 35-33 amid field goal controversy

The Pittsburgh Panthers defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies 35-33 in a highly contested ACC matchup at Lane Stadium. The victory keeps Pitt undefeated at 5-0, while the loss brings Virginia Tech to 4-1.

The game concluded with significant controversy when Virginia Tech kicker John Love’s 36-yard field goal attempt as time expired was ruled wide left by officials. While the kick appeared to be successful to many observers, NCAA replay rules limit reviews if the ball travels above the top of the uprights. Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi defended the ruling, stating, “it was no good, I can tell you that.”

During the game, Pitt's starting quarterback Mason Heintschel left with a right leg injury, prompting Holden Geriner to take over. Geriner contributed a touchdown pass to Cataurus Hicks to help secure the win. Virginia Tech quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer recorded a career-high 434 passing yards in the effort. Following the win, Pitt has earned a spot in the AP Top 25 rankings.
