Pittsburgh addresses industrial pollution and housing shortages

Pittsburgh is addressing urban challenges through both environmental science and housing policy reform. Researchers at Carnegie Mellon University are studying the Hazelwood Green site, a 178-acre former industrial tract. By using metagenomic sequencing on soil cores, scientists aim to determine if microbes have adapted to decades of steel-era pollution, such as heavy metals and BTEX chemicals. If these microorganisms can effectively break down contaminants, they could enhance bioremediation efforts for similar brownfield sites across the Rust Belt.

Simultaneously, Pittsburgh City Council is considering legislation to expand the use of accessory dwelling units (ADUs) to combat a local housing shortage of over 10,000 units. Advocates, including AARP, suggest that ADUs—such as backyard cottages or garage apartments—can provide affordable, flexible housing options that allow older adults to age in place while supporting young families and caregivers.
