Pittsburgh Democratic Socialists Transform Local Politics

Progressive activists linked to the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) have reshaped Pittsburgh’s Democratic Party by focusing on low‑turnout primaries and building a disciplined grassroots infrastructure. Early victories such as Mik Pappas’s 2017 win for a magisterial judgeship signaled the erosion of the traditional party establishment.

Subsequent campaigns by Sara Innamorato, Summer Lee and Ed Gainey expanded the movement’s reach, culminating in Gainey’s 2021 Democratic primary victory for mayor. In 2023, Matt Dugan captured the Allegheny County Democratic primary over incumbent District Attorney Stephen Zappala, reinforcing the coalition’s growing influence. Although Gainey lost the 2025 mayoral primary to moderate Corey O’Connor and Dugan was defeated in the 2023 general election after running as a Republican, the overall trend shows the far left moving from the fringe to a governing role within the city and county.
