Pittsburgh International Airport Unveils Public UPMC Terrace

On July 29, Pittsburgh International Airport opened the pre‑security UPMC Terrace, a 36,000‑square‑foot outdoor space that can be accessed by travelers, visitors and airport staff before reaching the gate. The terrace features walkways, seating and landscaping that reflect western Pennsylvania’s natural scenery, and is reachable from the Arrivals Level near the VisitPittsburgh desk and between baggage carousels 5‑8.

Allegheny County Airport Authority CEO Christina Cassotis highlighted the design as a new model for U.S. airports, while County Executive Sara Innamorato said the space is “for everyone,” not limited to club members or business‑class passengers. Council member Kathleen Madonna‑Emmerling and UPMC senior vice president James Taylor also praised the terrace for providing fresh air, natural light and a calm environment amid the busy travel experience.

The new amenity aligns with a growing trend toward incorporating publicly accessible outdoor areas in modern airport terminals, aiming to improve passenger well‑being and showcase regional natural beauty.
