Mason Heintschel ties Pitt record in 59-14 win over Miami (Ohio)
In college football season openers, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of Maryland secured dominant victories.
At Pittsburgh, sophomore quarterback Mason Heintschel tied a school record by throwing seven touchdown passes in a 59-14 win against Miami (Ohio). Heintschel completed 31 of 41 passes for 453 yards, distributing touchdowns to seven different receivers. The performance equaled the mark set by Pete Gonzalez in 1997. Additionally, Antonio Chadha tied a school field goal record with a 58-yard kick.
Maryland opened its campaign with a 62-0 shutout of Hampton University. The Terrapins' offense was led by a strong rushing attack that totaled 365 yards, including a 94-yard touchdown run by DeJuan Williams. The defense held Hampton to just 85 total yards and recorded five sacks and three interceptions.
