Pittsburgh Penguins begin training camp amid contract uncertainty
The Pittsburgh Penguins have commenced training camp for the 2026–2027 season, marked by both veteran uncertainty and a focus on integrating younger talent. Key franchise icons Sidney Crosby and Erik Karlsson are both entering the final year of their current contracts. While Crosby expressed a desire to play for several more years, the exact timeline remains undecided. Karlsson noted that he has not yet entered contract discussions with management, describing the team as being in a ‘weird stage’ and stating that his future may depend on the team's competitive success.
Veteran center Evgeni Malkin, who recently signed a one-year deal, also addressed his future, stating he is not closing the door on subsequent seasons as long as he remains at the top of his game.
Assistant General Manager Jason Spezza highlighted the team's developmental roadmap, noting that while the roster features many NHL-ready forwards, the organization intends to provide opportunities for younger players to establish themselves throughout the season, potentially through the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins system.
