Pittsburgh Pirates acquire catcher Christian Bethancourt from Yankees

The New York Yankees have traded veteran catcher Christian Bethancourt to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for cash considerations.

Bethancourt, 34, is an eight-year MLB veteran who has spent much of the current season in the minor leagues. After being released by the Chicago Cubs in July, he signed a minor-league deal with the Yankees. During his time with the Yankees' Triple-A affiliate, Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, he recorded a .333 batting average with three home runs.

Following the trade, Bethancourt has been assigned to Triple-A Indianapolis but is expected to join the Pirates' big league taxi squad in Los Angeles. His career MLB statistics include a .229 batting average and 35 home runs over 1,301 plate appearances.
