Pittsburgh Pirates expected to retain GM Ben Cherington

The Pittsburgh Pirates appear unlikely to replace general manager Ben Cherington this offseason despite a disappointing season. Insiders, including ESPN’s Buster Olney and Pirates.com’s Jason Mackey, have expressed surprise at the prospect of a leadership change, with Mackey stating he is “fully expecting Ben Cherington to be back.”

Cherington is currently in his seventh season with the organization. While the team is facing a potential losing season and is trailing in the Wild Card race, the front office has made several notable moves. These include the trade for second baseman Brandon Lowe, who has provided significant power, and the signing of free agent Ryan O’Hearn to a two-year, $29 million contract. Additionally, the team secured rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin with a nine-year, $140 million extension.
