Pittsburgh Pirates launch rehab program for rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin
Rookie shortstop Konnor Griffin, who was placed on the Pittsburgh Pirates' injured list on May 31 with a right forearm muscle strain, has begun a throwing progression at the team's complex in Bradenton, Florida. General manager Ben Cherington said Griffin is able to field, run and take batting practice, and that throwing was the last activity to resume. Griffin started throwing from 90 feet at about 75 % intensity and will continue to increase volume and distance before a rehabilitation assignment, though no specific date has been set. Cherington emphasized the need for a "legitimate throwing progression" to ensure Griffin returns symptom‑free.
While Griffin works toward a comeback, the Pirates also dealt with injuries to outfielder Oneil Cruz (hand fractures) and reliever Wilber Dotel (lat strain), both of which are being managed by the club's medical staff.
