Pittsburgh Pirates prospects show mixed development results

The Pittsburgh Pirates are seeing mixed results from their recent player development and drafting efforts. First-round pick Termarr Johnson, once considered a top-five prospect with high offensive potential, has struggled to meet expectations. Throughout his professional career, Johnson has maintained a .239 batting average and a .143 isolated slugging percentage. His progress was further hindered by a torn left ACL and LCL suffered in mid-August.

In contrast, catcher Axiel Plaz has emerged as a significant prospect following a strong season with High-A Greensboro. Plaz finished the season batting .305 with an OPS of .902 over 94 games, including 18 home runs and 74 RBI. His performance earned him South Atlantic League Player of the Week honors during a dominant late-season stretch, marking a substantial improvement from his previous seasons in Single-A Bradenton.
