Pittsburgh Pirates re-sign pitcher José Urquidy

The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed right-handed pitcher José Urquidy to a minor-league contract, assigning him to Triple-A Indianapolis. The move marks a reunion for the veteran pitcher and the club.

Urquidy’s 2026 season involved stints with the Pirates, the Chicago White Sox, and the Philadelphia Phillies. After being designated for assignment by the Phillies, he elected free agency before returning to Pittsburgh. During his time with the Pirates earlier in the year, he struggled in relief but found more success in Triple-A Indianapolis, where he posted a 3.44 ERA over 83.2 innings.

Previously a rotation staple for the Houston Astros, Urquidy’s recent seasons were impacted by Tommy John surgery. He is expected to compete for a role within the Pirates organization as they build their roster for the 2027 season.
