Pittsburgh reaches tentative deal to expand Three Rivers Heritage Trail
Pittsburgh officials have reached a tentative memorandum of understanding to expand the Three Rivers Heritage Trail by acquiring land from the freight company CSX. The agreement focuses on a 4.61-acre plot in the Strip District, which would extend the trail from 24th Street to 33rd Street and bridge the gap with Lower Lawrenceville.
Additional plans include acquiring a stretch of trail between Duck Hollow and the Carrie Furnace in Rankin to connect with surrounding communities. Proposed infrastructure improvements include a new pedestrian bridge from Duck Hollow to Hazelwood and upgrades to the Melanchton Pedestrian Bridge to ensure ADA compliance.
Mayor Corey O’Connor stated that expanding the trail network aims to make Pittsburgh a more attractive destination for residents and visitors. The Three Rivers Heritage Trail currently spans 35 miles and attracts over 1.3 million visitors annually. Final implementation remains subject to funding, design, and approval from the Surface Transportation Board and City Council.
