Joey Porter Jr. and Steelers at contract impasse
Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy has confirmed that the club is at a contract impasse with cornerback Joey Porter Jr. as the player enters the final year of his rookie deal. The standoff has coincided with Porter being placed on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list due to a back injury that flared up during a mobility test at training camp.
While the Steelers have already secured extensions for other members of their 2023 draft class, such as linebacker Nick Herbig and tight end Darnell Washington, Porter’s status remains uncertain. Porter has expressed a desire to be compensated as an elite-level cornerback, a market that has seen significant salary increases recently. Teammate Jalen Ramsey has publicly advocated for the team to pay Porter, citing his value to the secondary.
As the regular season approaches, the organization maintains a policy of not negotiating contracts once the season begins. While some reports suggest trade interest from other NFL teams, no official trade calls have been made. Porter has recently engaged in ‘hold-ins’ during minicamp and has shared cryptic social media posts amid the ongoing negotiations.
