Pittsburgh Steelers coach to reduce offensive volume amid struggles
Following a 20-3 loss to the New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy announced plans to reduce offensive volume to address execution errors. McCarthy noted that the team has struggled with cleanliness on offense, averaging only 8 points per game over the first two weeks of the season. He expressed a desire to provide quarterback Aaron Rodgers with better platforms to throw from, stating he does not want to rely on a “dink-and-dunk” style of play.
The performance has drawn significant criticism regarding the decision to rely on the 42-year-old Rodgers. Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe criticized the franchise for trusting an aging quarterback in a difficult situation where the offensive line has struggled to provide protection. Rodgers finished the recent game with 187 passing yards, zero touchdowns, and one interception while being sacked four times.
Offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio confirmed that the coaching staff is looking internally to improve results, focusing on helping players play faster and more effectively heading into Week 3 against the Cincinnati Bengals.
