Pittsburgh Steelers lock up young talent with $63 million contracts while planning future quarterback
The Pittsburgh Steelers have issued $63 million in guaranteed contracts to defensive tackle Nick Herbig and tight end Darnell Washington and are expected to extend other young players such as defensive back Joey Porter Jr. and defensive tackle Keeanu Benton before training camp ends. The extensions keep the players under contract through the 2027 season, providing cost certainty but also risking injury or performance decline before the team truly needs the money.
Team officials say the spending is aimed at stabilizing the roster ahead of the franchise's search for a successor to Aaron Rodgers. By 2027 the Steelers will have nine of eleven offensive starters and eight of eleven defensive starters secured, allowing the eventual quarterback to inherit a core group familiar with the system. The strategy also positions the club to trade draft assets for a rookie quarterback if needed.
Herbig, speaking on a podcast, offered advice to teammates navigating contract negotiations, urging them to stay focused, avoid social media distractions and keep their attention on preparation. He said, "There's gonna be days where you're mad, you're irritated, and there's days where you're just like, 'Whatever, it is what it is,'" emphasizing a disciplined mindset during this pivotal career phase.
