Pitztal Glacier: Excavator use sparks public outcry in Austria

The use of an excavator to dig into the Mittelbergferner glacier tongue at the Pitztal Glacier in Tyrol has triggered significant public backlash. Images captured by a webcam at the Braunschweiger Hütte, showing the machine leveling and shoveling ice, have been widely shared on social media, leading to accusations that the ski resort is deliberately destroying the glacier to maintain operations.

Operators, Pitztaler Gletscherbahnen, have defended the work as essential maintenance. They stated the measure is “unabdingbar notwendig” (absolutely necessary) to secure an emergency path within the ski area due to ongoing glacial retreat. The state of Tyrol confirmed the work aims to restore the connection of the path from the glacier ice to ice-free terrain, noting that a separate nature conservation permit was not required.

In response to the controversy, the Imst District Authority is reviewing the intervention. Meanwhile, environmental groups and the Alpine Club have expressed concern, with some observers noting that the mechanical removal of ice is occurring during a year of particularly intense melting caused by low winter precipitation.
