Piura: 9,000 informal vendors resist relocation efforts

In Piura, more than 9,000 informal vendors continue to occupy public streets and sidewalks, resisting efforts by the provincial municipality to relocate them. Ruth Oliva, the Manager of Economic Development and Commercial Services, stated that two potential relocation sites have been proposed: a 1,600-square-meter area in Las Capullanas and another in Los Polvorines. However, the relocation depends on the willingness of the vendors, as the municipality will not fund the construction of new market buildings.

Additionally, officials noted that approximately 6,000 vendors from Jr. Gonzalo Farfán had previously considered a move to Los Polvorines, but that site was discarded due to urban development plans for road expansion. The issue of informal commerce is further complicated by the fact that 400 stalls in the San Miguel Market remain closed, as owners use them merely as warehouses while selling their products in public spaces.
