Piura banana producers strengthen biosecurity against Fusarium R4T
Banana producers in Piura, Peru, are implementing enhanced biosecurity measures to mitigate the risk of Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense Race 4 Tropical (Foc R4T). A total of 152 producers are receiving technical assistance from the Regional Government of Piura, through the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and the PIP Banano project.
To prevent the entry and spread of the fungus, producers are being instructed to establish single access and exit points for their plots, install footbaths, and fence properties to control unauthorized entry. Technical guidance also includes strict protocols for cleaning and disinfecting tools, equipment, and footwear used during agricultural activities to prevent the movement of the pathogen via soil, plant remains, or vehicles.
