Piura dengue death prompts Peruvian Congress to summon Health Minister

A seven-year-old girl has died in Piura, Peru, after presenting severe symptoms compatible with dengue fever. The child, a student at San Ramón school in Chulucanas, was transferred from a local hospital to the Santa Rosa hospital in Piura due to complications including bleeding from the nose and mouth, where she subsequently passed away.

In response to the fatality, Miguel Huamán Cornejo, president of the Health Commission of the Congress of the Republic, has summoned Health Minister Luis Dyer Fernández to report on dengue prevention measures. The investigation will focus on fumigation campaigns, the elimination of breeding sites, and epidemiological surveillance, particularly in the provinces of Morropón, Huancabamba, Talara, Sullana, and Sechura.

Lawmakers are also demanding information regarding preparedness for the upcoming rainy season and the El Niño phenomenon. There are urgent calls to reinforce hospital capacity and implement immediate fumigation in schools within the Chulucanas area.
