Piura electricity tariffs rise 3.77% amid energy crisis

Electricity tariffs in Piura, Peru, have increased by 3.77% due to rising generation costs linked to congestion in the transmission lines supplying the northern region. This infrastructure bottleneck limits the ability to transport energy from other parts of the country, forcing a reliance on more expensive alternative generation methods.

The price hike impacts both residential households and the industrial sector. For families, the increase adds pressure to monthly budgets, particularly during high-temperature seasons when electricity consumption rises. For businesses, higher energy costs threaten competitiveness and increase operational expenses.

During a recent business forum organized by the Piura Chamber of Commerce and Production and Sudamericana de Energía (SDE), experts and energy representatives discussed the regional emergency. Pedro Carrasco Vásquez, regional manager of ENOSA, noted that higher energy acquisition costs are creating financial pressure on distributors, which in turn reduces available resources for infrastructure investment. Experts have called on the Ministry of Energy and Mines to evaluate regulatory mechanisms that would allow for increased local generation to mitigate these costs and prevent future energy instability in the north.
