Piura faces rising violence and flood risks from infrastructure delays
The Piura region in Peru is facing dual challenges regarding public safety and infrastructure. Residents of the Santa Rosa human settlement in the Veintiséis de Octubre district have expressed urgent concerns over ongoing road and sidewalk construction projects. Valued at over 40 million soles and managed by the Regional Government, the project has faced delays and lacks a proper drainage system, leading to fears that the upcoming El Niño phenomenon will cause severe flooding in the area.
Separately, official data from the National Warmi Ñan Program of the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations indicates a rise in violence within the region. Between January and July 2026, 4,578 cases of violence against women and family members were recorded. Women accounted for 87.7% of these cases. Psychological violence was the most prevalent type, representing 45.7% of reports, followed by physical violence at 40%. The province of Piura reported the highest concentration of these incidents.
