Piura hospital performs successful laparoscopic surgery on 9-year-old

A 9-year-old boy has successfully undergone a complex laparoscopic surgery to remove both his spleen and gallbladder at the Hospital III José Cayetano Heredia in Piura, Peru. The procedure was performed by a specialized medical team from EsSalud.

The patient suffers from spherocytosis, a condition affecting red blood cells that can lead to hemolysis and anemia. In this specific case, the condition also caused the formation of gallstones. The surgical team, led by surgeon Renato Díaz, performed a splenectomy and cholecystectomy using minimally invasive techniques through small incisions.

According to Dr. Díaz, this marks the first time such a combined laparoscopic intervention has been performed in the Piura region. The successful operation is considered a significant milestone for specialized pediatric surgery in the area, demonstrating the capability to treat multiple complications of a single disease through minimally invasive methods.
