Piyush Goyal discusses climate responsibility and Europe's role
Indian Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal addressed climate change and carbon emissions during the Berlin Global Dialogue in Germany. Goyal highlighted the disparity in global emissions, noting that while India accounts for approximately 17% of the world's population, its contribution to global carbon emissions remains below 3%. He pointed out that Europe's per capita carbon emissions are seven to eight times higher than India's.
Goyal emphasized that developed nations benefited from long-term industrial growth fueled by cheap energy and fossil fuels, such as coal. He argued that the responsibilities outlined in the 2015 Paris Agreement—specifically regarding economic assistance to developing nations—have not been met nearly a decade later.
In subsequent remarks, Goyal also praised Europe's leadership in environmental protection and noted the growing partnership between India and Europe. He stated that India has achieved its environmental targets ahead of schedule and mentioned that German industries increasingly view India as a strategic partner rather than just a market.
