Piyush Goyal seeks to boost India-Germany trade and R&D ties
Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal concluded a two-day visit to Berlin aimed at deepening the strategic partnership between India and Germany. A central focus of the mission was the upcoming India-European Union Free Trade Agreement (FTA), which Goyal indicated is expected to be signed by the end of 2026. He proposed an ambitious bilateral trade target of 310 billion euros, noting that current trade stands at approximately 31 billion euros.
Goyal engaged in high-level meetings with German officials, including Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Energy Katherina Reiche, and executives from major corporations such as Bayer, Fresenius, Siemens Healthineers, Bertelsmann, and Volkswagen. Discussions centered on expanding cooperation in advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, renewable energy, and research and development. Goyal emphasized the potential of combining German precision technology with India’s skilled workforce to drive global innovation.
Additionally, the Minister addressed the need to attract Indian researchers and scientists back to India by fostering stronger industry-academia partnerships. He also highlighted the importance of Indian industries meeting EU quality standards to fully leverage the benefits of the forthcoming FTA. The visit included the inauguration of the India Centre at the German Council on Foreign Relations (DGAP) in Berlin.
