Pizzo beach incident: German family's dog killed by man with umbrella pole
A German family from Berlin experienced a tragedy during their vacation in Pizzo, Calabria, when their miniature schnauzer, Martin, was killed on a beach on August 7, 2026.
According to the dog owner, Stanislav Kashynsky, a man used a metal umbrella pole to strike the dog after it approached a child. Kashynsky stated that the dog may have been attempting to protect the child or distract another dog that was chasing them. The dog suffered severe internal head injuries and had to be euthanized at a veterinary clinic.
The accused man, identified as the father of the child, has provided a different account to local media, including 'Corriere della Calabria'. He claims his actions were a necessary measure to protect his six-year-old son from the dogs.
Kashynsky also reported that the situation escalated, resulting in physical injuries to himself, including wounds to his head, ear, and knee. Authorities are currently reviewing statements, witness accounts, and medical findings to resolve the conflicting versions of the event.
