Pájara officials urged to halt Casa Las Señoras demolition

The Asambleas Municipales de Fuerteventura (AMF) is calling on the Pájara local government to take immediate action to prevent the scheduled demolition of Casa Las Señoras in Cueva de la Negra. The demolition is set to proceed on Wednesday, August 26.

AMF is advocating for a precautionary suspension of the demolition until the historical, ethnographic, and testimonial values of the building are fully evaluated. The property is reportedly over 150 years old and is considered the last standing structure of the former coastal settlement of Cueva de la Negra, which was historically tied to fishing and shellfish harvesting families in Jandía.

Pedro Armas, the AMF spokesperson for the Pájara City Council, criticized the current administration, composed of the PSOE and Coalición Canaria, for failing to activate municipal protections. AMF noted that under the Canary Islands Cultural Heritage Law (Ley 11/2019), municipalities have the responsibility to monitor heritage, report risks of destruction to the Cabildo, and propose urgent precautionary measures.
