PJATK faces UOKiK charges over illegal tuition fee increases

The President of the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK) has leveled charges against the Polish-Japanese Academy of Computer Technologies (PJATK) for violating the collective interests of consumers. The allegations center on the university's decision to increase tuition fees for students who began their studies in the 2022/2023 academic year or earlier.

According to UOKiK President Tomasz Chróstny, regulations in place prior to September 2023 guaranteed that tuition fees remained unchanged for the duration of a student's studies once a contract was signed. While new legislation introduced in September 2023 allows universities to adjust fees once a year based on inflation, these rules do not apply retroactively to older cohorts.

If the charges are confirmed, the academy could face a fine of up to 10 percent of its turnover.
