PKP Intercity to pilot satellite internet on Pendolino trains

PKP Intercity is launching a five-month pilot program to provide satellite internet for passengers on Pendolino trains. The initiative, scheduled to begin between late October and November, aims to eliminate “white spots” where mobile GSM signals are weak or unavailable.

Testing conducted by the carrier, in cooperation with ACO Solutions, demonstrated that satellite connectivity based on low earth orbit (LEO) constellations provided high-quality internet for 55% of the journey time, compared to only 18% for standard GSM operators. The satellite service is intended to complement, rather than replace, existing mobile network services.

If the passenger pilot is successful, PKP Intercity plans to install satellite receivers in Pendolino fleets during major maintenance periods between 2028 and 2029. While the technology is currently focused on Pendolino and future high-speed trains, the company continues to expand its digital services, including mobile application updates and Wi-Fi availability, which currently covers 70% of its wagons.
