Railway disruptions hit Warsaw region as new services return to Olecko
A major railway disruption is affecting the Warsaw Wileńska – Zielonka route following damage to a traffic control signaling cable caused by a construction company during renovation work. The failure of the automatic systems has forced rail operators to rely on manual telephone-based signaling to maintain limited movement.
As of Wednesday, the impact includes 38 cancelled trains and significant delays totaling hundreds of minutes. Koleje Mazowieckie has deployed replacement buses between Warsaw Wileńska and Wołomin and expanded ticket validity for city transit. PKP PLK has indicated there is currently no immediate timeline for the full repair of the infrastructure.
In separate news for the northeastern region, PKP Intercity is set to restore long-distance rail services to Olecko after a 14-year hiatus. Starting December 13, the IC ‘Gryf’ service will provide a direct connection between Gdynia and Suwałki, traveling through Ełk and Olecko. This service is made possible by the recent revitalization of railway lines 39 and 41.
