Pěšky do školy initiative launches tenth anniversary in Czech Republic

The tenth anniversary of the ‘Pěšky do školy’ (Walking to School) initiative is launching in the Czech Republic. The campaign, which runs from September 14 to 18, coincides with European Mobility Week. It aims to encourage children and parents to commute to school via walking, cycling, scooters, or public transport rather than by car.

Organizers seek to foster long-term habit changes to improve physical activity among youth and reduce traffic congestion and air pollution near school buildings. Last year, the project involved a record 585 schools and kindergartens across 371 municipalities, reaching approximately 72,800 children. Currently, around 550 schools have registered for this year's edition.

Participants can earn points for active commutes, and schools can win prizes for creative accompanying activities. The initiative addresses growing concerns regarding childhood obesity and sedentary lifestyles, aligning with World Health Organization recommendations for daily physical activity in children aged five to 17.
