Pál Fürcht alleges political interference in Hungarian prosecution

Former prosecutor Pál Fürcht has alleged significant political interference and pressure within the Hungarian prosecution service regarding the ‘Golden Convoy’ investigation. In recent interviews, Fürcht claimed that superiors dictated the direction of the probe, specifically instructing which individuals could be investigated and who could not be interrogated.

Fürcht stated that these interventions were intentionally conducted verbally to ensure there was ‘no written trace’ of the instructions. He reported that after a colleague identified irregularities in the case on May 8, 2024, he alerted the leadership of the Prosecution Office, but no integrity investigation was launched. Instead, he claims he received verbal instructions that he felt he could not legally protest.

Following these events, Fürcht submitted his resignation on June 8, 2024. He likened the interference to a higher court predetermining the verdict of a lower court and suggested that political expectations were being communicated to the prosecution service through certain organizations.
