Plakiotissa Dam irrigation network awaits funding evaluation

The funding evaluation for the irrigation network of the Plakiotissa Dam in Crete is expected to be completed by the end of the year. Argyros Zerva, General Secretary of EU Funds and Infrastructure at the Ministry of Rural Development and Food, provided details regarding the project's progress during an event in Archanes.

The Plakiotissa Dam is one of the largest irrigation projects in Crete and is intended to serve 37,000 stremmata (approximately 3,700 hectares) in the municipalities of Archanes-Asterousia and Gournes. While the dam's technical construction and sealing are complete and gradual filling has begun, the full operation of the dam depends on the construction and implementation of its irrigation networks.

The Region of Crete has completed the necessary studies and submitted a funding proposal to the Ministry of Rural Development and Food. Zerva expressed optimism regarding the approval of this funding, noting that the project is a priority following instructions from the Prime Minister's office.

Additionally, the General Secretary noted that results from the evaluation of various irrigation proposals, submitted following a call for applications by the Ministry, are expected by year-end.
