Plano voters to decide on venue tax for new Dallas Stars arena

Plano voters will decide on Proposition A this November, a proposal that could implement a venue tax to fund a new Dallas Stars arena and entertainment district. The project is slated for the current Shops at Willow Bend Mall site.

If approved, the tax would apply to hotel rooms, car rentals, arena parking, and tickets. City leaders estimate the measure would generate between $700 million and $900 million in revenue, with the city capping its total contribution at $1 billion. Dallas Stars President and CEO Brad Alberts stated that the team would be responsible for operating costs and would lease the city-owned arena for 30 years.

Opposition has formed via the 'Stop The Stars Arena' PAC. Residents in the group argue that the proposed taxes will impact local citizens who utilize these services, rather than just visitors.
