Plant-based diets may improve perceived attractiveness, research suggests
Research published in the journal Recent Progress in Nutrition suggests that a plant-based diet may influence physical attractiveness through three primary mechanisms: skin complexion, body odor, and physical composition.
A review of over 30 studies conducted between 2000 and 2025, led by David Goldman of the University of Helsinki, indicates that carotenoids—pigments found in foods like carrots, pumpkins, tomatoes, and leafy greens—can deposit in the skin. This process can result in a more golden skin tone. One study involving 35 participants showed measurable changes in complexion within six weeks after increasing fruit and vegetable consumption by approximately three servings per day.
While researchers note that attractiveness is subjective and some evidence remains indirect, the link between carotenoid intake and skin pigmentation is well-documented.
