Plant-based diets offer significant grocery cost savings
Research indicates that transitioning to a plant-based diet can significantly reduce grocery expenses. A study by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine suggests that a low-fat vegan diet consisting of fruits, grains, vegetables, and beans can reduce annual food costs by approximately 19% compared to the Standard American Diet. This equates to a daily saving of roughly $1.80, or about $650 per year.
In the Netherlands, an analysis by ProVeg International found that plant-based products are becoming increasingly competitive in price. Across nine major Dutch supermarkets, a basic plant-based basket was found to be up to 30% cheaper than one containing conventional meat and dairy. The study noted that 53% of the plant-based products examined cost less than the lowest-priced animal version at the same retailer.
Experts attribute these price differences to targeted pricing strategies by private-label brands and the impact of inflation on animal product costs. Beyond financial savings, researchers emphasize that these dietary shifts may also help manage health conditions such as obesity and heart disease.
