Plant care: Causes and solutions for yellowing leaves

Yellowing leaves in houseplants can be caused by various factors beyond simple dehydration. According to Daniel Paixão Beretta, coordinator of the Agronomy course at Faculdade Anhanguera, yellowing is a general sign of plant stress that requires a holistic observation of soil, light, watering frequency, and stem condition to diagnose correctly.

Common causes include:

• Excessive water: Overwatering can damage roots and reduce soil oxygen, leading to rot. It is recommended to check soil moisture with a finger and ensure pots have proper drainage.

• Lack of water: Insufficient hydration can cause leaves to turn yellow, dry out, or develop brown edges.

• Inadequate lighting: Different species have varying light requirements that must be met to maintain health.
