Plant care guide: Protecting garden species from winter frost

As winter approaches, gardening experts recommend specific measures to protect garden and balcony plants from frost damage. Sensitive species, particularly tropical and exotic varieties that grew outdoors during the summer, are at high risk from dropping temperatures.

To ensure plants remain healthy for spring, the choice of wintering environment is critical. Heat-loving plants such as bougainvillea, gardenia, geranium, and fuchsia are best suited for heated indoor spaces. In contrast, hibiscus, citrus, and certain bougainvillea varieties can survive in unheated indoor areas. Succulents and bulbous plants that require dry conditions should be placed near well-lit windows.

Preparation should begin before temperatures reach critical thresholds. For plants in the ground, experts suggest carefully digging them up, cleaning excess soil, pruning stems if necessary, and repotting with fresh soil. It is also vital to inspect plants for pests, fungi, or mealybugs before moving them indoors. During the winter, watering should be reduced to prevent root rot, and misting leaves may be necessary to combat low indoor humidity.
