Plant care strategies for managing shrubs during heatwaves
During periods of extreme heat and heatwaves, proper irrigation is essential for maintaining ornamental shrubs. While established, well-rooted shrubs can withstand longer dry spells, they still require additional water during prolonged droughts to avoid heat stress. Generally, watering mature shrubs once or twice a week with approximately 2.5 centimeters of water is sufficient, though frequency may need to increase during extreme temperatures.
Newly planted shrubs require more frequent attention, often needing water every few days or even daily during their first two years. The most effective time for watering is early morning, ideally before 10:00 AM, to prevent rapid evaporation. It is recommended to water deeply—reaching a depth of 7 to 10 centimeters—to encourage deeper root growth, which provides better protection against heat and desiccation.
To avoid fungal diseases, foliage should not be unnecessarily wet, especially in the evening. Using a slow-drip hose for at least 30 minutes can help water penetrate deep into the soil, but overwatering should be avoided to prevent root rot.
