Plant care: Protecting balcony greenery during autumn transition

As autumn approaches and temperatures drop, gardeners are advised to move balcony and terrace plants indoors to protect them from frost. Specific varieties like gladioli and pelargoniums require careful handling; gladioli bulbs should be harvested after the leaves turn yellow and stored in a cool, dry place, while pelargoniums should be moved to a bright, frost-free area with reduced watering.

To prevent introducing pests into the home, it is critical to inspect plants thoroughly before bringing them inside. Checks should include examining the undersides of leaves, stems, and the soil for signs of insects, sticky residue, white coatings, or webbing. If pests are detected, the plant should be quarantined and treated separately from the rest of the collection. Even seemingly healthy plants should be kept isolated for a few days to ensure no hidden issues emerge.

When selecting indoor plants, lifestyle factors such as light availability, watering frequency, and the presence of pets should be considered. For instance, Sansevieria is recommended for those who may forget to water regularly, as its fleshy leaves store moisture well.
