Plant Fibers and Prebiotics Fuel Gut Microbiome Health
Dietary plant proteins and fibers from legumes, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, seeds and nuts reach the colon largely undigested. There they are fermented by resident bacteria, producing short‑chain fatty acids such as acetate, propionate and butyrate. These metabolites serve as energy for colon cells, help regulate inflammation, reinforce the intestinal barrier and support immune function.
Prebiotic fibers, a subset of non‑digestible plant carbohydrates, selectively stimulate beneficial microbes including Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli. Their fermentation also generates short‑chain fatty acids, especially butyrate, which strengthens the mucosal barrier, improves mineral absorption and reduces systemic inflammation. Scientific studies associate diets rich in plant‑based foods with favorable shifts in microbiota activity, although a universal “optimal” microbiome has not been defined.
