Plastic food containers linked to increased heart failure risk

New research suggests that consuming food from plastic containers may significantly increase the risk of congestive heart failure. A two-part study published in Science Direct indicates that frequent exposure to plastic chemicals may cause changes in the gut microbiome, leading to inflammation that damages the circulatory system.

The study involved over 3,000 individuals in China and included laboratory testing on mice exposed to chemicals leached from plastic containers into hot water. Researchers noted that high-frequency exposure to plastics is linked to an increased risk of heart failure. Chemicals such as BPA, phthalates, and PFAS, often found in food packaging, have been associated with various health issues, including reduced fertility and cancer.

In a related context regarding gut health, scientific attention is increasing toward postbiotics. Unlike probiotics, which are live microorganisms, postbiotics are preparations containing inactivated microorganisms or their components that provide health benefits. These include metabolites like short-chain fatty acids—acetate, propionate, and butyrate—which are produced when gut bacteria ferment dietary fibers. Butyrate, for instance, serves as an energy source for colon cells and helps maintain the intestinal barrier.
