Plastic Overshoot Day 2026: Global waste exceeds management capacity
September 6, 2026, marks Plastic Overshoot Day, the date when global plastic waste production exceeds the capacity of management systems to collect and treat it safely. According to reports from Earth Action and WWF, approximately 72 million tonnes of plastic waste will be mismanaged in 2026, representing about 31.6% of total global plastic production and consumption.
While the date has shifted slightly later in the year since 2021—indicating a marginal improvement in waste management capacity—this progress is offset by rising plastic production. Mismanaged plastic waste has increased by over 3 million tonnes in the last five years. Without significant intervention to reduce production and consumption, the volume of plastic at risk of entering the environment could nearly double by 2040.
The crisis is geographically uneven. Twelve countries, led by China, Russia, India, Brazil, and Mexico, are responsible for 60% of the world's mismanaged plastic waste. Additionally, roughly two-thirds of the global population lives in regions where waste production exceeds local management capabilities.
