Plastic Pollution in the Baltic Sea Fuels Dangerous Vibrio Bacteria
Researchers have linked two recent deaths in Germany to infections by Vibrio bacteria that thrive in warm Baltic Sea waters. The pathogens, normally present in seawater, can multiply rapidly at higher temperatures and cause severe illness when they enter the body through skin wounds, especially in older or immunocompromised individuals.
Scientists from the Alfred‑Wegener‑Institut discovered that the bacteria attach to plastic debris and micro‑fibres, creating a “plastisphere” that transports them across the sea. Plastic remains in the marine environment for years, allowing harmful microbes to travel long distances. An early‑warning system is being tested to alert the public to rising infection risks. A separate study highlighted how plastic objects serve as new habitats for a variety of marine organisms, forming complex biofilms that further facilitate the spread of pathogens.
The findings underscore the dual threat of plastic pollution: ecological disruption and heightened public‑health risks.
