Plastic pyrolysis efficiency and environmental impact debated

The debate over the efficacy and environmental impact of plastic pyrolysis, also known as chemical or advanced recycling, continues to divide industry proponents and environmental critics.

Proponents, such as Klean Industries, argue that pyrolysis is a vital component of a complete recovery system. They suggest that while mechanical recycling is superior for clean, single-polymer plastics, pyrolysis is the most efficient method for handling mixed, multilayer, or contaminated waste that would otherwise be sent to landfills or incinerators. By converting this waste into oil, gas, and char, the process aims to retain more material value than incineration.

Conversely, critics and NGOs argue that the technology is being used by the plastics industry to rebrand incineration as an environmentally sound process. These critics claim that pyrolysis facilities emit toxic pollutants, require high energy consumption, and store hazardous chemicals that pose risks to local communities. Furthermore, they contend that these facilities produce a miniscule amount of actual recycled plastic, despite industry efforts to use the process to claim recycling credits for new plastic products.
